The name "Romantikerfriedhof", in use since the 19th century, refers to the graves of Klemens Maria Hofbauer (1751-1820) and his friends, members of the Viennese romantic movement, buried here.
The chapel was built by Baron Joseph von Penkler in 1785 as a burial site for his two sisters.
